The January 2008 Happenings
“IS BLOOD THINNER THAN WATER?”
Every child is the very personification of God, it is said. Child is the Father of Man, is an oft-quoted maxim. Child is the symbol of tomorrow all that is fresh, bright, blemishless and beautiful. Anaga is also one such child, a bright and brilliant little girl. She is twelve years of age now. Seeing her mischievous smile and high-spirited actions no one can say that she is a Thalassemia patient undergoing blood transfusion almost every month.
But, that is how Anaga lives on, fighting against all odds. But, it is to her credit that she never lets herself feel gloomy and lost.
When she was barely a toddler her mother and grandmother took her one day to Udavum Karangal asking that she be admitted there. Though they belonged to the lower strata of the society, their attitude of being too very eager to dump their responsibility didn’t speak well of them and they were told that as they were very much there they should take care of the baby. But, the very next day Anaga was left abandoned in front of the gates of Udavum Karangal by her very mother who was never to be seen afterwards.
Anaga was taken into the fold of Udavum Karangal and soon she became one among all those little gods and golden flowers of Udavum Karangal. She proved very friendly and warm never complaining and never indulging in any naughty activity. But, on and off she started falling sick, swooning, growing extremely fatigued and worn out. She was taken to the Apollo Hospital where it was diagnosed that she was afflicted with this deadly ailment called Thalassemia which requires blood transfusion every month. It costs a lot, but Udavum Karangal, true to its name, has been offering this costly medical assistance to Anaga all these twelve years. At times, when even arranging one square meal for all the inmates proves a Herculean task, offering the required medical facilities to Anaga prove all the more difficult, but, to this day Udavum Karangal has not let her go without medical assistance.
“She is our baby”, says Mr. Vidyaakar of Udavaum Karangal “and we all love her. Her positive attitude toward Life, her bubbly and energetic self, her friendly nature has captured the hearts of one and all here. We feel sad to see her falling sick every now and then and then she has to be under treatment which would be strenuous for her. But, she bears it all in a calm and composed manner which is amazing. We only hope that we get help and support to give proper care and treatment to this sweet little friend of ours. As always, we keep our fingers crossed, hoping that sufficient help would come her way and she be saved. For, after all, she does have a right to live, doesn’t she?”
