COIMBATORE: Udavum Karangal, a home that rehabilitates abandoned children and adults, got a new inmate on Friday - a six-year old girl.

Like most of the children at the home in Myleripalayam, this girl too has been through a harrowing experience. She was found chained to the home’s name board placed outside the compound wall.

Speaking to The Hindu, R. Rajagopal, in-charge of Udavum Karangal, Coimbatore, said the girl was mentally disabled and was hearing and speech impaired.

The security guard, who opened the gates in the early hours of the morning, found the girl and immediately informed the volunteers of Udavum Karangal.

“We were shocked to see the plight of the girl. She was lying down with one foot chained to the post. The chain was locked so that she could not try to free herself,” Dr. Rajagopal said.

The volunteers of the centre suspect that the girl’s family might have tied her to the pole outside the centre on Thursday night.

And since she was speech impaired, she could not call for help. “We have not been able to gather any information about the child’s family as she cannot speak,” Dr.Rajagopal said.

The volunteers removed the chains from her feet and gave her first aid. The police station at Chettipalayam was also informed, Dr.Rajagoapl said.

Now the child’s health was improving and she would be taken care of by Udavum Karangal.
